The Invention Of The Sweatshirt

-Brand BookBack in 1902, Russell manufactured wool-based football jerseys for his football (Gridiron) team. This was the accepted order of things at the time but as you can imagine, it wasn’t very practical. Wool shrinks when wet, it doesn’t breathe, it restricts movement, and it’s downright itchy. Seeing that one of these attributes translate to glory under the Friday night lights Ben Russell Jr’s response was the all-American, all-cotton sweatshirt as a football undergarment and eventually, it replaced the wool jerseys in the sport altogether before finding its way into the mainstream market as casual wear. The rest, as they say, is history.

Of course, the sweatshirt has gone through many changes through its century-and-a-bit of existence. Pullovers were the originals, and then came the ever-popular hooded variety. Zips, buttons, rib-cuffed, rib-hemmed, oversized, slim-fit – there’s one for everyone and everyone has one..

When you think about it, it’s funny. We’ve just launched in SA, yet everyone who owns and loves a sweatshirt or hoodie, no matter the brand, has been rocking our style since his/her grandparents can remember.
